Two functional structures were designed, one elevated above street level, the other annexed to the furnace, in order to separate private use from public access. A wide staircase to the north allows access to the upper level, while a ramp to the south leads to the lower level.
The new building, which ideally replaced the volume once occupied by the canopies, was kept separate from the existing structure so that the chimney remained completely unobstructed, serving as a visual reference to the semi-underground part. The row of steel pillars, rhythmically marking the facade along the street, aims to achieve the same effect.
Commercial Building - Fornace Parietti
Once the restoration was completed, the design of the furnace building had to address the delicate balance between the existing structure and the new one. There were two stakeholders regarding the functional purposes: the Municipal Administration, which had reserved the right to reclaim a certain area of the new building, and the furnace; and the property owners, who had a specific development potential that could be maximized as much as possible
